Westport News: Veteran Tax Exemptions

  The Assessor’s Office reminds all veterans (or widows/widowers of veterans) who have served during an active period of war for at least 90 days and have received an honorable discharge, to file their DD-214 in the Town Clerk’s Office prior to Oct. 1, 2015. The exemption is $6,000 off an assessment and will be reflected in the July 2016 tax bill. Veterans who have already filed and are receiving an exemption do not need to re-file. The Town of Westport also offers a local option for an  additional $20,000 off an assessment. Note that this is an income qualifying program. Maximum income is $59,600 for a single veteran and $67,200 for a married veteran. Applications for this program are accepted prior to Oct. 1, 2015. A…

Westport News: Embezzlement Charges

#Westport CT--On Tuesday September 8th, 2015 Tran Huynh-Storch (age 36) turned herself into the Westport Police Department after learning that there was a warrant for her arrest. The arrest warrant for Huynh-Storch stems from a larceny complaint received from her employer back in February 2015. The criminal complaint was investigated by the Westport Police Department Detective Bureau. From the complaint received it is alleged that Huynh-Storch, an employee of the Post Road East business, had embezzled over $71,000.00 by double paying herself in her paycheck and direct depositing money between July 15th 2011 and January 2015. Arrested was Tran Huynh-Storch (age 36) of Fairfield Connecticut Tran Huynh-Storch was charged with Larceny 1st degree C.G.S 53a-122 Tran Huynh-Storch posted $75,000.00 bond and was issued a court date of September 23rd, 2015.…

Westport News: Water Rescue

On 09/05/2015 at approximately 1120 hrs the Westport Police Marine Division received a VHF distress call regarding a capsized vessel with three (3) people in the waters east of Cockenoe Island. Marine Officer Brendan Fearon and Detective Serenity Dobson responded to the area in Marine Unit 2 and located three adult males floating in the water separated from their vessel. All three men were pulled from the water onto the police boat and found to be in good health. All were wearing life jackets at the time their boat tipped over. Their boat, an 18’ canoe, was recovered and towed to Compo Marina. The three men had been fishing and capsized in the choppy waters. They reported they were in the water for 15 minutes before a…

Westport News: Scaffold Collapse

3:34pm--Westport CT--    The Westport Fire Department responded to a scaffold collapse with two construction works injured at the Bedford Square construction site.  Two construction works were getting setup on the 2nd floor to cut steel as part of the ongoing renovations and construction at 52 Post Road East as part of the project when the scaffold they were using tipped over. One worker was on the scaffold and the other was hit by it; both suffered non-life threating leg injuries.  Westport EMS and Police also responded providing primary patient care while firefighters used ropes and rigging to set up a lowering system to remove the two construction workers from the 2nd floor of building. Westport News: Check Forgery

On Friday August 14th, 2015 David Reichard (age 26) turned herself into the Westport Police Department after learning that there was a warrant for his arrest. The arrest warrant for Reichard stems from a bad check complaint received from First County Bank back in May 2015. From the complaint received it is alleged that Reichard deposited a check for $3960.00 into his bank account which was forged. The investigation by the Westport Police Department Detective Bureau revealed that the victim, Monroe Muffler of Monroe Connecticut had reported its business account compromised months earlier and that the suspect had who is not known to them had forged the check and attempted to receive money from their account.
