Governor Announces Effort to Reduce Standardized Testing In Public Schools

Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the administration is taking two actions to help reduce the time Connecticut students spend taking standardized tests.  In a letter to U.S. Department of Education (USED) Secretary Arne Duncan, the Governor asked for USED to consider how the number of high-stakes exams in Grade 11 could be reduced under existing federal law. In the letter, the Governor writes, “I am eager to explore solutions for the students who may be our most over-tested: our eleventh graders.” One potential avenue for alleviating the burden on the eleventh grade would be to examine whether a college entrance exam, such as the SAT, could satisfy the federally mandated high school exam.  In 2013, 83 percent of Connecticut…

GOV. MALLOY STATEMENT ON IMMIGRATION ISSUES

#HARTFORD, CT– Governor Dannel P. Malloy today released the following statement:  “I continue to work closely with the federal government on this important issue.  Today, I participated in a conference call with the White House and the Secretaries of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services.  It appears that substantial progress has been made to diminish the need for housing children for extended periods in large scale institutional settings.  For example, the facility at Nogales now houses 22 children, down from more than 1,000.  Much of this work has been accomplished by pursuing the appropriate step of placing children as quickly as possible with relatives, a position that we have advocated for the past week.  “The federal government has placed…

Early this month the federal government requested the State of Connecticut House 2,000 migrant children at the closed Southbury Training School in Southbury. The governor feels the training school has the capacity or the ability to house the children due to the amount of time the facility has been closed. The governor feels that Congress should appropriate the funds the administration has requested. The governor is sympathetic to the children's plight but he feels "we should be controlling our boarders" and that " Guatemala needs to take care of Guatemala's problems and that Honduras needs to take care…
