As a child, I emigrated from Taiwan to the United States. I moved from a country that was always under the threat of Communist attack and martial law to a country built upon the principles of freedom and liberty.
During that move, I can remember viewing American military personnel as protectors of democracy – symbols of the greatest nation in the world.
Since then, I have tried to view Veterans Day as an opportunity to remind that we need to honor, recognize and respect all of our veterans, all of the time, not just during recognition days. It is a time to remember the sacrifices our veterans have made to protect us. We can never repay them, but we can support them and thank them.
