#Bridgeport, Conn. (February 14, 2015) – Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch declared a snow emergency, which started at midnight.
During the snow emergency, there will be no parking on any of the designated Snow Emergency Streets, which are clearly marked, and all vehicles on other streets across the city are to park on the “even-side” of the street starting at midnight. A list of Snow Emergency Streets can be found here: http://www.bridgeportct.gov/snowemergencystreets.
“This latest storm is projecting between four and six inches of snow, and some of our secondary streets already are narrowed by snow from previous storms,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “We will continue to monitor updated forecasts. We’re preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. And, we recommend that residents be safe and smart as they weather the storm this weekend.”
According to Mayor Finch, another concern is falling temperatures which, combined with wind chill, could result in temperatures of -12 to -14 degrees. The storm is expected to have sustained winds of 9 to 25 miles per hour and gusts of up to 50.
“Stay inside if you can. It will be bitterly cold. If you have to go outside, wear layers,” said Mayor Finch.
People needing emergency shelter should call 211.
Emergency Operations Center Director Scott Appleby said the EOC has been in contact with the United Illuminating Co. to discuss preparation for the potential of downed wires.
Fire Chief Brian Rooney emphasized that people should treat downed wires they encounter with extreme caution.
“Stay away from downed wires and err on the side of caution,” he said.
As always, Police Chief Joseph L. Gaudett Jr. reminded people to shovel their sidewalks and assist in digging out fire hydrants.
Public Facilities will have 30 to 35 plows and other apparatus, and private contractors have been placed on “stand-by” if their services are needed.
