Housatonic Museum of Art Postpones Exhibit Due To Water Damage

#BRIDGEPORT, CT   The opening of the “Drip-Drop, Tick-Tock” exhibit by Joseph Fucigna at Housatonic Museum of Art has been postponed. The museum’s Burt Chernow Gallery is located on the campus of Housatonic Community College, and its walls and floors suffered water damage overnight when the sprinkler system activated in response to an overheated computer in a lab on the floor above. Fortunately, the museum’s collection did not experience any damage. However, the museum will be temporarily closed for maintenance starting August 23. The Museum will continue to move forward with the planned opening of the reinstallation of its permanent collection. Bridgeport Police Officer/Instructor Athletic Accomplishments Honored

#Bridgeport CT--For Bridgeport Police Training Academy Instructor Officer Kateema Riettie thought it was just another two-mile run with recruits, this time to the police department at 300 Congress Street. This time, however, she was greeted by Chief Of Police AJ Perez. Mayor Joesph Ganim arrived with a plaque in hand. Little did Riettie know that the department and mayor were presenting her with a plaque praising here recent athletic accomplishments like competing in the World Athletic Cup in London last July and participating in the Central American Caribbean games in Columbia late July and early this August. Chief Perez encouraged the recruits to follow in her footsteps.

Governor’s Statement On Stay of Deportation

#Hartford Governor Dannel P. Malloy released the following statement on the decision by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to grant a temporary stay to Salma Sikander of New Haven, who was scheduled to be deported to Bangladesh Thursday morning. “While this is undoubtedly good news for Salma and her family, it should never have gotten to this point. It should not have taken intervention from elected officials and hunger strikes from community activists for reason to prevail and for ICE to grant a temporary stay to a well-respected and valued member of the community. Salma Sikander is not a bad hombre. She is not a criminal, and this ordeal has caused her and her family tremendous undue trauma.”   This press…

#Bridgeport CT--Mayor Ganim, along with city officials declared the remediation of what was known as Mount Trashmore to be completed. In the early 1990's under Ganim's first stint as mayor, he and at the time State Representative Ernie Newton rallied to put a stop of the illegal dump located at Central Avenue at Trowel Street. Dubbed Mount Trashmore, the 35-foot-high, 30,000-ton pile of construction debris was illegally dumped.  The debris was removed in the early 90's but the dirty, contaminated soiled remained. In 2017 contractors were sought the environmental clean-up the soil which was completed today. There has been talk of senior housing on the two and a half acre lot but nothing has been made official at this time.
