Bridgeport Police UPDATE:  Two Bridgeport School Crossing Guards were struck while working in the intersection of North Ave/Park Ave at approximately 8:12 am on Sept 12, 2017.  Motorist, Larissa B. Fountain of Madison Avenue Bridgeport was operating her 2007 Nissan Sentra travelling east on North Avenue when she crossed the intersection of Park Avenue and mounted the curb striking two crossing guards on duty.  The two guards were standing on the sidewalk when they were struck by the Nissan. Which then skidded about forty feet before coming to a final resting position at the North Ave entrance/exit to People’s Bank.

 

Crossing guard, Leonard Hunter, 68, of Shell Street, Bridgeport suffered two broken legs and intracerebral hemorrhage (brain bleed). He is listed in critical condition. He took the full brunt of the car and was carried about thirty feet from point of impact.  He was in surgery at Saint Vincent’s at the time of this report.  The second crossing guard, Idalen Vargas, 50, of  Huntington Road, Bridgeport suffered minor injuries as she was standing eastward on the sidewalk and was struck by the left side of the Nissan.  She is listed in stable condition at Saint Vincent’s.

 

Motorist, Larissa Fountain, 47, was transported to Bridgeport Hospital. Mrs. Fountain said she blacked out prior to the crash.  Witness were located and camera footage was recovered.  Bridgeport Police Serious Crash Team responded and were assisted by members of the Southern Fairfield County Traffic Unit’s Reconstruction Team. 

 

The collision occurred at 08:12 and the first officers (PO D. Neary and PO R Ryan) were on scene at 08:14.  Serious Crash Team Officer Darryl Wilson is the lead investigator.  Investigation continuing.

 

8:30AMish–#Bridgeport CT–There were two crossing guards struck just before 8:30 a.m. — one male and one female.  A female motorist had just dropped off her daughter at school and apparently blacked out at the wheel.  She stayed at the scene.  The Crossing guards struck were dragged for at least 25 feet.  one female and one male injured.  The male had two broken legs and is in stable condition at St. Vincent’s hospital.  Obviously, this is a very serious accident and we are glad there were no further injuries.
