4:18pm–Firefighters were called to the old Stratfield Market at 1280 Stratfield Road for a fire in the back of the building. Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola said when they arrived they found smoke coming from the second-floor windows. What they found was a fire in the trash compactor that extended into the structure. Firefighters quickly had the fire contained and were putting out hot spots when I arrived. EMS from AMR provided a rehab for the firefighters. The chief said he did not suspect the fire to be suspicious since recently being purchased by a new owner. The fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate. Firefighters from Westport and Bridgeport provided mutual aid covering the empty Fairfield fire stations as the worked this fire.
