UPDATE: Mayor Ganim felt that the show certainly had its merits and showed the true heroism and professionalism of the men and women of the Bridgeport Police Department carrying out a very challenging job in the true interest of public service. And it also showed that Bridgeport Police are an example to the nation for doing their duties with dignity and respect for the community they are sworn to protect.
And the mayor was proud to have the Bridgeport police featured nationally and let the viewers into their lives for a few hours every week. However, Mayor Ganim had serious concerns that were echoed by several important voices in our community that despite its merits, the program was giving Bridgeport an inaccurate national reputation; inflating the prevalence of crime in the Park City in a way that can deter potential investors and people from living or doing business here.
We don’t want the first impression of Bridgeport from a national audience to be unfairly associated with crime and miss the whole picture of beauty, industriousness and vitality that we represent. A community should be defined and judged by the best it has to offer, and not by its worst moments.
#LivePD UPDATE: UNCONFIRMED sources said there were multiple complaints about the baby that died on Live PD. The baby was also in DCF care. The city council also voted on it last week, here is the City Council minutes that pertain to the incident:
Council Member Brantley asked for a point of personal privilege. She said that she had concerns
about the A&E broadcasts involving the Bridgeport Police. Recently, she has been receiving
calls from constituents regarding the show and she asked why the Council had not been told
about this or previously approved it. Mayor Ganim said that he would get a report from the
Chief on this because the Chief would know the protocol. Council Member Brantley said that
there were resident who were concerned about the fact that the cameras were in the homes of
residents during the time of a tragedy. These people should not have cameras shoved in their
faces.
Council Member Taylor-Moye said that she was all in favor of police body cameras, but felt that
broadcasting the calls on live TV was wrong.
Council Member Vizzo-Paniccia reminded everyone to sign their documents before leaving the
meeting.
#LivePD #Bridgeport Connecticut– If you are waiting for action on A&E’s Live PD don’t hold your breath, the mayor pulled the plug on the show recording live. There was a pre-recorded segment shown early in tonight’s broadcast. The camera banks on the show’s wall was absent of Bridgeport cameras. Usually you can see the officers riding in their cruisers. I received a tip and then followed up with other sources that confirmed that the mayor pulled the plug however, I have not spoken to the mayor directly.
