2016 Results show Overall Improvement of 11% for Mathematics, 8% Improvement in Oral Reading Comprehension Across all Grade Levels
#Bridgeport, CT – Mayor Joe Ganim and Bridgeport School Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz today released National AIMSweb test results for Bridgeport public school students that show significant improvement over scores from one year ago. The AIMSweb online exam evaluates student capabilities in the areas of: early literacy and numeracy measures, oral reading comprehension, math computation, and math concepts and applications. Specifically, the number of Bridgeport students that scored above the 75th percentile in math concepts and applications increased approximately 11% in comparison to 2015 numbers, and the number of Bridgeport students scoring at or above the 75th percentile in oral reading comprehension increased by approximately 8%. The number of students scoring below the 25th percentile in mathematics and reading comprehension also decreased from 2015 to 2016. This year, less than 50% of all students scored below the 25th percentile in both subjects. In 2015, almost all grades saw at least 50% of students in Math Computation score below the 25th percentile. The 2016 scores for the MAZE reading oral comprehension test also showed a 24% decrease in the number of students scoring below the 25th percentile.
“These numbers represent very positive improvement in the academic acheivements of Bridgeport’s 21,000 public school students,” said Mayor Ganim. “We are a school district that faces serious challenges, and there is always room for improvement. But these results are the product of the hard work of our students, our teachers, and our parents who reinforce the scholastic curriculum at home. By continuing to work together and holding our children to high standards, we can help our students live up to their full potential so they can become the future leaders, entrepreneurs, great achievers they are meant to be.”

These tests pinpoint subjects in which students need extra assistance, and this information is crucial in helping our teachers maximize every student’s potential to learn and develop.”
AIMSweb is a web-based standardized assessment, data management and reporting system that compares data against a national sample of more than 1,000,000 students. The sample population contains a broad cross section of the American school-aged population, representing a diverse array of gender, ethnicity and socio-economic backgrounds.
